The purpose of the Planning Commission is to provide guidance and direction for Maple Valley's future growth through continued review and improvement to the City's comprehensive land use plan, zoning code, shoreline management, environmental protection and related land use documents.
Members of the Planning Commission are selected from individuals who have an interest in environmental affairs, planning, land use, and residential and commercial development as evidenced by training, experience or actions. An intent of the selection process shall be to evenly represent these areas of interest. Membership in the Planning Commission shall be limited to residents, business owners, or owners of property within the City.
There are seven (7) voting members appointed to the Planning Commission and one or more non-voting Alternate Planning Commissioners. Alternate Planning Commissioners attend Planning Commission meetings, and may be selected to fill a Planning Commissioner position which becomes vacant due to reasons other than term expiration.

The Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. the first and third Wednesdays of each month at the Tahoma School District Board Room, 25720 Maple Valley Black Diamond Road SE, Maple Valley. All meetings are open to the public.
Once the minutes of each meeting have been approved by the Commission, the approved minutes will be posted to the website as soon as feasible following each Commission meeting.
Planning Commissioner and Alternate Planning Commissioner Recruitment
The Maple Valley City Council is recruiting individuals who are interested in serving in the capacity of Planning Commissioner and Alternate Planning Commissioner. The duties of the Planning Commissioner include attending meetings and making recommendations to City Council on land use issues and revision to the Development Regulations in the City of Maple Valley. The Alternate Planning Commissioner must also attend meetings so that he/she will be prepared to fill an unanticipated vacancy. The Planning Commission meets from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. the first and third Wednesdays of each month, with occasional special meetings and workshops on varying days of the week. (Advance notice of meetings is given.)
In order to qualify for this appointment, individuals must be residents of, or own property or a business in, the City of Maple Valley. Persons should have an interest in environmental affairs, planning, land use, and residential and commercial development as evidenced by training, experience, or actions. The term of office for a Planning Commissioner is four years and an Alternate Planning Commissioner is two years. If the event an Alternate Planning Commissioner fills a Planning Commissioner vacancy, their term may be extended for up to four years.
